EP 37 – 2010-05-16
Yael Jhirad and Lag B-Omer
YAEL JHIRAD
The Women’s International Zionist Organization is a movement of Jewish women who actively work for the welfare of citizens of the state of Israel – of all races and religions. Recently Yael Jhirad, the dynamic president of WIZO India, visited South Africa. As an Indian Jewess, Yael shared with us the history and communal life of the Jews of Mumbai.
Lag Ba'Omer is a minor Jewish holiday that falls between the holidays of Passover –Pesach and Shavout. During this period we have the counting of the Omer which is traditionally a time of morning, however there is one day Lag B’Omer where one may celebrate. We were invited to the Grand Unity Parade in Cape Town and joined in the festivities that followed.
