ENCOUNTERS (ROBBEN ISLAND)

In line with Herzlia School’s mission, JIPSY – Jewish Informal Programmes for Student Youth, strives to create positive Jewish experiences. The development, growth and strengthening of Jewish education, Jewish identity, Jewish leadership and Jewish values is of core focus. One of the highlights of the year for Grade 11 students is the Encounter Programme. A five-day retreat held on Robben Island, pupils listen to several different speakers, many of whom are Rabbis and lay leaders. They have an opportunity to question and debate in an atmosphere that is mutually respectful, open and non-judgmental. The goal of the Encounters Programme is to connect the participants to themselves, to the community and to their Judaism.
Students are confronted with real issues, they need to clarify their values, think out of the box and take control of their decisions. Through discussion, debate and fun, all the participants made their own conclusions about enjoying the things that are really important, to make their lives more meaningful, not just material, and to engage positively with their fellow human beings.
